Staying the Course When the Going Gets Tough

What makes some stay the course and others give up?

The travel industry has been through a shakedown. The fallout continues and sadly, travel advisors are leaving the industry.

Some were fleeing for the exits last March. Others have left quietly with each wave of the pandemic.

Leaving to earn money is necessary and important. However, leaving entirely suspends the momentum in your business and it gets harder to restart.

I suspect for most, the passion for travel runs deep, and you are keeping one foot in. However, you struggle to make sense of the way forward.

Yet, others hang in there. Every single day there are advisors who have a record sale, and agencies who beat their best month in travel. These advisors have a growth mindset, despite serious mud on their faces.

The question is how to have a growth mindset, and continue to invest in your travel business when the journey back is much longer than any of us expected?

"When the going gets tough, the tough get going."

Joseph Kennedy

Growing up, I heard this over and over again. I believe it, but what does that really mean? Until Covid, I wasn't sure.

Now I've seen the difference between those who have a growth mindset, and those who don't.

There are three stages of a Growth Mindset:

There are three stages of a Growth Mindset:

1. The FEAR ZONE:

What you’re feeling is not unusual. There are millions of travel industry professionals impacted by the pandemic. The nagging daily fears show up for every single person. Uncertainty creates fears which are the shared human experience. The difference is what you do about them.

Fears often present themselves as procrastination. You’re convinced the news is not good. You’re not ready, you’re not prepared, you need more information, more certainty, more of something before you act.

When you procrastinate enough times, you stop moving. The lack of movement undermines your confidence, and the fear gets worse. The mud turns to clay and now you can't move.

2. The LEARNING ZONE:

The learning zone is when you decide that growing will pay off, even if you’re not certain of the outcome. You keep going, even when it feels like the odds, and therefore the opinion of others may be against you.

Carol Dwek, the founder of the growth mindset movement says this:

“What makes a growth mindset so winsome is that it creates a passion for learning

rather than a hunger for approval.

Not only are people with this mindset not discouraged by failure, but they don’t actually see themselves as failing in those situations – they see themselves as learning.”

3. The GROWTH ZONE:

The growth zone is when you fully commit to the journey. You take tiny steps every single day towards your goals. You focus on progress, not perfection. You rest in the belief that what you do now, at this moment will make your future better.

Be present-minded, but future-focused.

I know this journey is long and can feel isolating. You are not alone! There are tremendous benefits to facing your fears and doing it anyway.

Here are just a few of the benefits of remaining engaged:

  • The opportunity to shift your business

  • Do more of what you love

  • Improved skills

  • More confidence

  • Deeper relationships with customers

  • Deeper relationships with suppliers

  • Increased customer loyalty

  • More adaptive to change

  • Expanded curiosity

  • Less time wasted

  • Increased productivity

  • More joy in the moment!

Stay the course, keep moving forward, no matter how small the step, take it.
