Getting Everything You Want

Getting Everything You Want

“You can have everything you want,

just not all at once.”

-       Oprah Winfrey

I ponder this quote often. It reminds me that it is ok to want many things! It is also reminds me that getting what you want is about choosing.

As you look ahead to the end of next year, what is your big goal?

What do you really want, more than anything else?

We all know that setting goals is an important part of building a business.

What you may not know is how dramatically goal achievement shifts by these five simple steps.

In a study by the Association of Talent Development they found that setting the goal was only 10% of what it takes to achieve it. In order of magnitude, from smallest to highest, here are the other key factors in goal attainment, with a few tips on how to make it work for you.

1.    Goal Setting – 10%

The fundamentals of setting the goal are writing it down and measuring it. Think through all the ways the goal can be measured such as sales, days, hours or people. Add the supporting numbers such as number of calls, visits, runs or days in a row. Numbers give you the tick in the box dopamine that keeps the game alive!

2.    Deciding – 25%

Indecision is where doubt creeps in. If you haven’t made a firm decision on how to rearrange your life around achieving your goal, ask yourself, have you really made the decision or am I sitting on a fence somewhere?

Goal attainment is a series of decisions on a daily basis. The mistake most people make is underestimating how pushy and demanding a goal can be. Is it shouting, “Are we doing this?” or is it whispering, “Nah, you can do this later.”

3.    Planning – 50%

“Plans are useless,

but planning is essential.”

-Dwight Eisenhower

Plans are neat tidy summaries that sit in a drawer or on a sticky note on your computer. Planning on the other hand is your goal in motion. Planning is living and breathing in your priorities, meetings, and projects. Planning ensures that goals are constantly adjusted, measured and improved on.

4.    Committing to Someone – 65%

At this stage we see how powerful bringing in a trusted advisor, team members, and stakeholders can be on goal achievement. When we commit our goals to others we gain support, input and accountability to do the work.

For leaders, goal setting in isolation is a recipe for lack of buy in. A better way to set team goals is from the bottom up. The best leaders are intimately familiar with their individual advisor goals. Not only does it dramatically improve engagement, it demonstrates if there is a big gap between what you want, and what the current team can deliver.

5.    Accountability Appointment – 95% (Wow!)

This final factor in goal achievement is staggering and true. From big goals to tiny habits when we show up for one another as “accountability buddies” it exponentially impacts our ability to achieve goals.

I am in two different accountability groups for things I want to achieve this year: Writing a book and building my practice. I also have a mentor who I invest in so that I know I will show up prepared.

Goal-getting is a team sport in every sense of the word. Find a friend or business coach who can help you get everything you want.

If you are in pursuit of something important, take time to think through each of these stages. If you are interested in working with a business coach who can support you in all five stages and beyond, let’s have a conversation!
